US: Coalition of states to curb transit emissions
A coalition of nine Northeast and mid-Atlantic states and the District of Columbia have announced an agreement to work to impose regional limits on carbon emissions from transportation sources. The group said emissions from transportation sources account for the largest portion of the region’s carbon pollution.
DC: Washington, D.C., legalizes sports betting
The District of Columbia Council gave final approval to legal sports betting, making the nation’s capital the first in the Washington, Maryland, Virginia region to allow residents and visitors to bet money on professional sports teams and contests.
CA: California bars could stay open until 4 a.m.
The proposal would create a five-year pilot program under which Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, West Hollywood, Long Beach, Coachella, Cathedral City and Palm Springs could extend alcohol sales in bars, clubs and restaurants from 2 a.m. until 4 a.m.
NV: Nevada legislature first in U.S. with majority women
When it convenes in February, the Nevada legislature will have 32 women and 31 men, with 23 women in the 42-member Assembly and nine in the 21-member Senate. Clark County Commissioners helped tip the scales after voting to appoint two Democratic women to Assembly seats that were vacant.

CO: Colorado regulators increase oil, gas setbacks from school
The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has approved new rules to increase setbacks between new oil and gas operations and school playgrounds and sports fields. Under current rules, the setback between new drilling and outdoor facilities will increase to 1,000 feet.
MN: Suicide rate rose in Minnesota in 2017
Suicides increased 5 percent in Minnesota last year over 2016, prompting state officials to warn of a growing public health challenge and remind residents that there are resources for help. The spike was driven by a 9 percent increase in male suicides, state Department of Health statistics show.
