US: Uber reaches $148 million settlement with states
Ride-hailing company Uber has agreed to pay $148 million to settle allegations from 50 states and the District of Columbia that it violated data breach laws when it waited a year to disclose a hack affecting tens of millions of its riders and drivers. It is the largest multistate penalty ever levied by state authorities for a data breach.

Denver paid $30,000 last year to install 10 large storage lockers along a busy road for homeless people to use to keep clothing and other possessions safe. The city has now removed them, after people slept and allegedly sold sex and narcotics inside the unventilated containers.

A legislative compromise would head off a potential move by the governor to let federal judges redraw House district boundaries before all seats come up for election next year.
CA: California law restricts concealed gun permit
Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill that will make it harder for Californians to obtain concealed gun permits, but he vetoed a proposal that would have expanded the number of people who could petition the courts for an order removing firearms from those thought to be dangerous. State law currently allows police officers and immediate family members to ask for a “gun violence restraining order.”
HI: Hawaii agriculture board approves banning wild animals in shows
The Hawaii Board of Agriculture approved amended rules that would prohibit “dangerous, wild animals” from being imported for short-term circus or carnival exhibitions or performances. If signed by Democratic Gov. David Ige, the change means that tigers, monkeys, elephants — and even crocodiles — will likely no longer be featured in carnivals or shows in the state.
