Uber is shutting down its self-driving car tests in Arizona, where one of the cars was involved in a fatal crash with a pedestrian in March. The company notified about 300 Arizona workers in the self-driving program that they were being terminated. 

MO: Missouri lawmakers OK measure to reduce surprise emergency room bills

Missouri lawmakers passed a bill that protects consumers from so-called “balance billing” — when a patient is on the hook for the remaining balance of an out-of-network bill from the ER their insurer has only partially paid. If signed by the governor, the measure will guard against the practice that can have significant financial consequences for patients. 

PA: Pennsylvania’s new long-term care program draws fire

Some of the 80,000 government-subsidized individuals enrolled in Pennsylvania’s Community HealthChoices program in 14 southwestern counties complained about a lack of transportation services, criticized the level of communication from their managed care organizations and fretted that those insurers will reduce their services after June 30.

TN: Governor signs law banning Tennessee marriage of minors under 17

Republican Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill into law that prohibits the marriage of minors under the age of 17 in Tennessee. The governor’s signature marks the conclusion of a monthslong campaign to end child marriage in the state. 

NV: Nevada rakes in $7 million in marijuana taxes in March

Tax revenue from marijuana sales in Nevada continues to climb, setting a new high of more than $7 million in March, the ninth month of legal recreational pot sales in the state. Revenues from pot taxes are outpacing the Nevada Department of Taxation’s expectations.

But the plan’s success will depend in large part on whether Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other elected officials have the appetite to tackle a far-reaching and expensive plan. 

NJ: New Jersey OKs M annually to rescue nuclear industry

Legislation that would authorize $300 million annually to rescue New Jersey’s nuclear energy industry — a request for financial help made by the state’s largest utility company — was signed into law. Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, also signed a measure aimed at strengthening the state’s renewable energy goals. 

OR: Oregon taxpayers in line for M in ‘kicker’ tax refunds

Continued strong economic growth in Oregon means individuals could get a total of $555 million in personal income tax refunds in two years. Oregon’s quarterly revenue forecast shows the state’s economy is growing faster than expected, according to the state economist.
