The Arkansas secretary of state’s office has denied a Hindu group’s request to place a statue of the monkey god Lord Hanuman on the grounds of the Capitol, rejecting an argument that the group should have a religious statue if the state is to allow a monument to the Ten Commandments there.

Many Americans, especially public-school parents, give low marks to rating a teacher based partly on how students perform on standardized tests, according to a new national survey.
OH: Ohio Hospital Association opposes legal marijuana sales and use
The association, which represents 220 hospitals and 13 health systems in Ohio, urged voters to oppose a proposed constitutional amendment that would legalize marijuana use for adults over age 21 and allow medical marijuana use for minors with parental consent. Legalization would have a negative effect on many people’s health, the group said.
CA: California lawmakers consider making kindergarten mandatory
To close the achievement gap, some California educators and lawmakers want to require children to enter school at an earlier age. A bill that would make kindergarten mandatory is pending in the Senate. Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a similar bill last year.
IL: Illinois prison data breach exposed hundreds of personnel files to friend of inmate
The Illinois Department of Corrections inadvertently released the Social Security numbers of more than 1,000 employees while working to comply with a Freedom of Information Act request for the names, ranks and salaries of some of the department’s employees.
MT: Montana won’t appeal ruling that blocks reduction to teachers’ pensions
The state of Montana has agreed not to appeal a judge’s ruling that blocked a proposed reduction in the annual benefit adjustments in the Montana Teachers Retirement System. In turn, the teachers’ union that sued agreed not to pursue the state for payment of its legal expenses.
