PROFILE

Susan Banta directs research for Pew’s public sector retirement systems project, which focuses on helping states and localities ensure that their retirement plans are affordable and sustainable. Banta leads a team of researchers that studies and analyzes the funding policies, investment practices, governance, and benefit design of state pension systems, data that can help inform the decisions of policymakers.

Before joining Pew, Banta spent more than 20 years advising governments on public finance, tax policy, and other revenue issues. This work included serving as senior budget officer in the Executive Office of the Mayor in Washington, D.C., where she advised Mayor Vincent C. Gray on tax policy and the city’s economic development operating budget. Banta was also the director of the Office of Policy Analysis at the Council of the District of Columbia, and a director with KPMG Barents Group.

Banta holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s in economics from Miami University.
