Ohio Law Offers Balanced Model for Payday Loan Reform

State lawmakers and other stakeholders to share insights at Pew-hosted national briefing

This year, Ohio lawmakers passed the Fairness in Lending Act, a landmark payday loan reform measure that makes small loans safer for consumers while maintaining widespread access to credit. Next month, The Pew Charitable Trusts will present a briefing with Ohio legislators from both sides of the aisle, business leaders, advocates, and researchers to discuss the policy and share lessons learned. As other states grapple with how to appropriately govern the marketplace for small loans, Ohio’s approach holds promise for the 12 million Americans across the country who use payday loans each year. The half-day event will also include a lunch and happy hour. Among the key topics:

  • Ohio policymakers will discuss how they designed strong safeguards that balance the interests of borrowers and lenders.
  • Stakeholders from Ohioans for Payday Loan Reform will reflect on successful coalition and campaign efforts.
  • Strategists and researchers will share strategies to advance meaningful reform in other states with payday loans.

When: Monday, Nov. 12, 2018, noon-5 p.m. EST.

Where: The Pew Charitable Trusts, 901 E St. NW, Washington, DC 20004.

What: A briefing with Ohio lawmakers and other payday reform stakeholders. With limited seating at the event, panels and remarks will be webcast and recorded for viewers across the country.
