Navigating Transportation Funding

The United States is facing major challenges in maintaining investments in the country’s highways and transit systems, problems that will require federal, state, and local policymakers to make difficult choices in the years ahead.

To help inform those policy decisions, The Pew Charitable Trusts is pleased to host a discussion of the shared challenges and opportunities faced by all levels of government. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx will offer opening remarks. A panel discussion with state and local officials will follow. The event will be held at Pew offices in Washington and available via live webcast.

With the temporary infusion of funding for the federal highway trust fund set to run out by May, states and localities are again facing the prospect that shortfalls in the fund could delay or reduce the federal money available for transportation projects.

At the same time, many states are taking action to make their own transportation funding more sustainable. Their efforts highlight the major challenges that all levels of government face in maintaining investments in highways and transit systems.
