The Pew Charitable Trusts in the European Union

The Pew Charitable Trusts works to encourage responsive government and support scientific research, pursuing research-based advocacy and using data to make a difference on a wide range of issues. Among those are global ocean conservation, fisheries management, criminal justice reform and antibiotic resistance. Our mission is to improve public policy, inform the public and invigorate civic life.

The Pew Research Center, a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts, studies unfolding global attitudes and demographic trends, and helps policymakers and the public prepare for future challenges. The center has conducted public opinion research across the European continent since 1991, gauging attitudes on the economy, trade, religion and the European Union (EU).

In Europe, The Pew Charitable Trusts focuses primarily on environmental policy initiatives related to the conservation and sustainable use of the marine environment, from the waters of northwestern Europe to the high seas beyond the jurisdiction of any single government. Pew is also working to protect ocean ecosystems surrounding the overseas territories of France and the United Kingdom (UK), and through our office in Brussels we work with EU institutions on a wide range of global conservation issues.

Key initiatives

Pew’s environmental expertise spans 40 years of initiatives to preserve wilderness areas, restore biodiversity and increase understanding of marine ecology. Our ocean conservation projects include efforts to safeguard habitat, prevent ocean plastics, reform high seas governance and address unsustainable fishing practices. These initiatives are aimed collectively towards restoring the productivity, diversity and abundance of our oceans. We closely collaborate with partners that share a commitment to independent research, measurable results and public service.

Science provides the critical foundation of Pew’s ongoing work in marine and terrestrial conservation. Pew’s experts provide technical expertise, develop and manage research projects, and communicate scientific and analytical results widely and effectively to inform conservation policy and sustainable management of global natural resources.

In addition, the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation seeks to improve ocean health by generating highquality research and fostering a global community of experts who collaborate to address the issues facing our seas.

Our mission

Our work as a global non-governmental organisation builds on the approach of The Pew Charitable Trusts’ founders, dating back to 1948. Pew brings a data-driven and results-oriented approach to a wide range of project initiatives. For more than 70 years, we have turned indifference into action—asking tough questions, studying problems, working with strong partners and striving for effective solutions that bring diverse stakeholders together.
