TX: Texas’ ban on mask mandates in public schools back in place after court ruling

A federal appellate court has temporarily restored Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order prohibiting mask mandates in schools. The order from the three-judge panel stated that there had been “no concrete, or actual or imminent, injury as a result of the enforcement” of the executive order.

Republican lawmakers in Missouri have filed a raft of bills targeting COVID-19 vaccine requirements. One proposal would bar schools from requiring students to get the vaccine. Several would force businesses to serve customers who are not vaccinated. 

CO: Colorado lawmakers announce plans to protect abortion rights

Colorado lawmakers plan to try to enshrine abortion rights into state law given the possibility the U.S Supreme Court could overturn Roe v. Wade. Advocates for reproductive rights in Colorado previously said they didn’t think putting explicit protections for abortion access into state law was necessary.

The new law puts in place some of the nation’s most restrictive abortion measures, including one that seeks to block the procedure at a gestational stage as early as six weeks or if the doctor knows the patient is seeking an abortion due to the fetus’ sex, race or Down syndrome diagnosis.

IA: Iowa sees 2021 peak for COVID hospitalizations
