Jen Sawada is a manager for the Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project’s providing strategic guidance and project management support for campaigns across Latin America and the Pacific. She previously led a new effort under Pew’s international fisheries program that focused on reducing bycatch and exploring protections of nursery and spawning sites in fisheries. Prior to that, Sawada directed Pew’s work to highlight the plight of sharks from overfishing and help rebuild their populations through habitat protection and catch and trade regulation. She worked to encourage countries in the Pacific and Caribbean to adopt domestic measures to protect sharks, such as shark sanctuaries, and ensure implementation of these measures.

Before joining Pew in 2009, Sawada served as a campaign associate at the American Lands Alliance, with a focus on policy and legislation to protect and restore forests in the United States.

Sawada holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental systems ecology, behavior, and evolution from the University of California, San Diego.
