Senator Bob Carr, Australia's minister for foreign affairs, explains why his country is backing a proposal by the United States and New Zealand to create a vast marine protected area in Antarctica's Ross Sea.

He spoke at a reception hosted by The Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington, DC, along with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the New Zealand Ambassador to the United States the Right Honorable Mike Moore, and Karen Sack, Pew's deputy director on ocean protection. Australia, France, and the European Union have proposed additional marine protections for East Antarctic waters, also backed by the United States. Both proposals will be considered by 24 countries and the European Union in July 2013.
