US: Fewer poor are uninsured, new data on the ACA shows
The share of poor Americans who were uninsured declined substantially in 2014, according to the first full year of federal data since the Affordable Care Act extended health coverage. A larger percentage of the poor lacked health insurance to begin with, but they also benefited from premium subsidies and the expansion of Medicaid. More than 20 states refused to expand the federal-state health insurance program for the poor, and many experts said the gains would have been even larger had they done so.
OK: Oklahoma on record earthquake pace
The state has begun taking steps to abate earthquakes related to drilling. Still, Oklahoma experienced 468 quakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater through April. That’s a leap of nearly 90 percent over the 248 quakes of that strength in the first four months of last year, when a record 997 quakes were recorded.

Lawmakers have introduced a bill that would allow students to consume medical marijuana at school in New Jersey. Students could not smoke the substance on school property, and it would have to be administered in the form of edible oil by a parent or a person they designate.

Republican Gov. Terry Branstad said the bill would expand high-speed Internet service to rural Iowa communities and provide a statewide framework for locating cellphone towers to improve wireless connections. The legislation creates a10-year property tax exemption and a method to provide federal, state and private grants to install equipment in targeted areas of the state.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas said the U.S. Supreme Court should torpedo the core of President Obama’s signature health care law, and Congress and the states should let it die.
CA: Marine life protection bill goes to California governor
The Assembly gave final approval to the measure, which allows state wildlife officers and other law enforcement agencies to combat poaching and illegal fishing in the areas off California’s coastline by issuing violators a ticket — similar to a traffic violation — to enforce the laws.
MA: Massachusetts’ Baker calls for more beds, treatment for drug addiction
In response to an epidemic that claimed 1,000 lives from overdoses last year, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker pledged to establish 100 new addiction-treatment beds, provide education on addiction to professionals who care for pregnant women and new mothers, and to make an overdose antidote more widely available in Massachusetts.
