The historic Sacramento mansion thathoused Ronald Reagan, Earl Warren and a host of other California governorshas become a victim of state budget cuts, The New York Times reports.
California officials announced Friday (May 13) that 70 state parks will close to the public as a result of some $11 billion in budget cuts enacted by the state Legislature earlier this year. The California governor’s mansion is on the list.
In choosing which of the 278 (state) parks to close, officials worked to keep open those with the most attendance and historical significance, as well as those that bring in the most revenue, “
The Times reported. “Officials said 92 percent of park attendance and 94 percent of revenue would be preserved. There may be more closings if the department’s budget is further cut.”
Democratic Governor Jerry Brown — who lives in an apartment in Sacramento, not in the governor’s mansion — has been pushing for an extension of previously approved tax hikes to help avoid further cuts in the budget. Some Republicans said the closure of the executive mansion is a political scare tactic on Brown’s part. “Why close down the public services that families enjoy the most?” a California Republican Party official asked The Times.
