Working to End Overfishing

Pew leads efforts to end overfishing and rebuild depleted U.S. ocean fish populations.

Legislative Action

The Federal Fisheries Policy Project leads efforts to ensure that Congress and the National Marine Fisheries Service effectively implement the law to end overfishing, rebuild depleted fish populations and protect ocean ecosystems.

The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act

Thanks to the Magnuson-Stevens Act, hard work, and dedication, our nation now benefits from dozens of rebuilt fish populations. The law’s requirements to end overfishing and rebuild fish populations are working. Since 2000 alone, 36 once-depleted fish populations have been rebuilt to healthy levels. But several new threats could undermine these historic accomplishments.

Fisheries Funding

Healthy fish populations and thriving fishing businesses pump billions of dollars into the U.S. economy and deserve dedicated funding.
