Government Performance Project

Imagine a government that provides better service with fewer resources—where improvements aren’t just debated, but actually happen. A government that invests and saves responsibly by learning from other states’ successes—and failures. That responds to the public’s needs based on honest conversation about tough decisions and difficult trade-offs.

The Government Performance Project (GPP), a project of the Pew Center on the States, conducts extensive research and analysis to understand how states can better serve the public, and we work with states to help strengthen state policy and management.

GPP’s signature product is a 50-state report card which provides cross-state comparative information and detailed analyses of how individual states manage their money, people, infrastructure and information. 

In addition, the GPP helps state policy makers navigate these challenges by sharing what works, learning from what doesn’t and helping states adapt ideas to their unique needs. Last year, GPP created the Management Lab to actively foster management reform and implement the Pew recommendations. The Management Lab provides states with a range of support including access to best practices, direct assistance and seminars to bring state officials together to share effective approaches and lessons learned.
