Election Initiatives

Many Americans were complacent about casting and counting votes in elections—until the disputed 2000 presidential race and the recount in Florida brought the issues into much sharper focus. Voters are increasingly concerned about new technologies and if these new methods guarantee that votes are counted accurately. Also, recent controversies sparked new debate about registration and turnout related issues.

Make Voting Work, a project of the Pew Center on the States, is an ambitious initiative launched in December 2006. The project seeks to foster an election system that achieves the highest standards of accuracy, convenience, efficiency and security.

The initiative examines the most pressing elections problems, and undertakes and evaluates pilot projects and experiments designed to address issues identified during elections—under the stress of real-world conditions. This research will inform our efforts to identify effective solutions—policies, practices and technologies—that address the key challenges facing the election process.
