Elections

A strong democracy relies on just and fair elections. Increasingly, however, public confidence in elections has been undermined by several factors, including: loopholes in earlier campaign-finance reform efforts that meant big-money donors continue to exert hefty political influence; new electronic voting machines; and other controversies that have shaken voters’ faith in the security of the ballot box.

The Pew Center on the States oversees an array of programs aimed at promoting solutions to these core issues for America.

The efforts include:

  • Campaign finance reform. Pew has teamed with a number of partners since the mid-1990s in efforts to raise greater awareness of the influence of large donors in the American political process.
  • Electionline.org. Collects data and tracks election reform efforts across the country.
  • Make Voting Work. Develops and disseminates information about voting reforms and initiatives, and joins with many other key groups to promote election reform efforts.
