Washington, DC - 12/05/2013 - Statement by Phyllis Cuttino, director of Pew's clean energy program, regarding President Barack Obama's executive order setting a renewable energy goal for the federal government of 20 percent by 2020, more than double the current goal of 7.5 percent.

"We applaud President Obama’s leadership and executive action to ensure that 20 percent of electricity purchased by federal agencies is from renewable sources by 2020.

Investments in renewable energy can improve both national security and our long-term energy security. Last year, for example, the Department of Defense set a goal of producing or procuring 3 gigawatts of renewable power by 2025 on Air Force, Army, and Navy installations.

Research by Pew’s clean energy program demonstrates that policy matters. This new national goal will help spur private investment, create jobs, and enhance global competitiveness."
