05/18/2010 - Gov. Charlie Crist has signed a bill that that opens the door for more than 100,000 unemployed Floridians to receive as many as 20 weeks more of jobless benefits.
The bill uses federal money to pay claims for people who've exhausted all other benefits and raises the maximum number of weeks anyone can collect in Florida from 79 to 99. Many other states already allow recipients to collect benefits for up to 99 weeks.
Federal officials say about 45 percent of the unemployed have been out of work for six months or more, and the Pew Economic Policy Group says about 23 percent — or 3.4 million — have been jobless for at least a year.
