Bail Reform Could Save City Money, Report Says

05/18/2010 - Philadelphia could save money by keeping people out of jail as they await trial with a more effective bail system, according to a report issued Monday by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

An overhaul of the bail system is just one of the ways that the city could reduce the number of people in jail, the report said.

"You have to be careful that you do this in such a way that you don't jeopardize public safety," said Larry Eichel, project director for Pew's Philadelphia Research Initiative.
