01/31/2010 - The 15th meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), scheduled in Doha from March 13 – 25 has been described as a landmark event by a noted conservationist.

“This is the first time the Middle East is hosting the exercise to discuss limits or prohibitions on international trade in endangered and threatened plants and animals,” the US-based Pew Environment Group’s deputy director Dr Susan Lieberman said.

“At the last CITES meeting when Qatar put its name in and proposed no other country opposed because they all recognised it was important to come here, as the event has been in every other region of the world,” she recalled in an interview with Gulf Times yesterday.
