Data Project to Help Arts Groups Gauge Impact, Health of Sector

11/29/2009 - A foundation-driven effort to get the state's arts and culture organizations participating in a national online database is expected to give a clearer picture of the sector's economic impact and financial health.

In May, Michigan is expected to become the eighth state to join the Cultural Data Project, launched five years ago in Pennsylvania.

Reliable longitudinal data on the sector in Michigan and in other states will really help funders and the arts and culture organizations themselves “understand the collective economic impact and ... the collective financial health of the sector and trends over time of how the sector is doing, either as whole or by segment,” said Neville Vakharia, project director of the Cultural Data Project at the Pew Charitable Trusts in Philadelphia.
