07/27/2009 - Mayor Nutter is spot on in his attempt to rein in health-care costs for city workers and reform the outmoded payment system that wastes tens of millions of dollars a year.
If anything, what the mayor wants isn't enough. But it's a fair and responsible start.

As it stands, city workers enjoy a gold-plated benefits package. Taxpayers fund 100 percent of the health-insurance premiums for most of the city workers.
By comparison, a Pew Charitable Trusts study found local governments require single employees to contribute an average of 9 percent of the cost for health-care coverage and those with families to contribute 27 percent.
