Editorial: Red Snapper Ban Necessary to Protect a Vital but Depleted Fishery

03/07/2009 - The news wasn’t good this week for Space Coast fishermen and locals who love red snapper on the dinner table, including us.

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council approved a temporary moratorium on catching the species because overfishing has badly depleted the stock.

The decision, while unpopular, was necessary to ensure the long-term preservation of the prized fish that’s important to the commercial and recreational fishing industries.
