01/16/2009 - The Senate approved a major land package Thursday that includes measures to protect thousands of acres of wilderness areas and rivers in California, including the Coachella Valley.
“We can't lose our wilderness areas,'' said Sen. Barbara Boxer, a Democrat and co-sponsor of three California measures. “People need places to go. … It's a lasting legacy.''
Jane Danowitz, director of the Pew Environment Group's U.S. public lands program, said the vote “represents the dawn of a new day in Congress for public land protection.''
