10/01/2008 - After several years of design and construction, the Center City District (CCD), along with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Fairmount Park Commission staff and Parkway institutions celebrated the opening of the first free-standing café on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Capriccio Café and Espresso Bar at Café Cret (pronounced "Cray"). "This marks another significant advancement in transforming the Parkway into an animated cultural campus and visitor destination," said Paul R. Levy, President and CEO of the CCD. "Working with our partners at the Commonwealth and Fairmount Park Commission, we have produced a high quality, attractive amenity for Center City workers, families and visitors."

Funding for the design of the café came from a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources ($80,000). Support for landscape improvements and the café building came from PennDOT ($700,000) and the Center City District ($500,000). Funds to light the café and the sculpture, The Prophet, were provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts.
