04/22/2008 - Long-anticipated renovations to the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial will begin this summer, officials at the Franklin Institute announced yesterday, thanks to nearly $1.5 million appropriated by Congress.
Combining that with a $1 million grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts and another $1 million from the city's Cultural Fund, officials at the Franklin Institute said they were only about $200,000 away from completely funding the renovation of Franklin Hall, which houses the 30-ton white marble statue of Franklin. It is one of the few national memorials in private hands.
The funding package, announced yesterday, will also support development of new Franklin-related programming, as well as artifact display.
