Group Calls for New Look at Abuse Prevention

01/30/2008 - Child abuse and neglect cost the U.S. economy more than $104 billion in 2007, according to a new report that calls for more emphasis on prevention programs.

Despite the cost, the report by Prevent Child Abuse found only 10 percent of the $7 billion in federal money doled out annually to state child welfare programs can be used for prevention programs.

"We have got to have a new way of thinking about prevention," said Jim Hmurovich, president and chief executive of Prevent Child Abuse America.
