02/25/2011 - Time and again, we’ve said that the most effective environmentalist is not the stereotypical tree-hugging hippie but a hard-nosed businessman (or woman) who understands the value of our natural resources and wants to protect them for future generations.
One of the greatest natural resources of the people of the commonwealth of Virginia, indeed of the entire United States, is the Chesapeake Bay. Tallying up the economic contributions of the tourism, recreation and seafood industries, one study pegged the Bay’s potential “value” at close to $1 trillion.
But that depends on a clean Bay, a healthy Bay, a vibrant Bay. And that’s not what we have now.
