01/05/2011 - It took about five minutes following his appointment Tuesday as Canada's new environment minister for former television broadcaster Peter Kent to become the target of an opposition jab that played on the stereotype of an airhead anchorman.

"Mr. Kent will be there to deliver the lines that are prepared for him by the Prime Minister's Office," deputy NDP leader Thomas Mulcair said at a news conference in Montreal moments after the players in Prime Minister Stephen Harper's mini-cabinet shuffle were unveiled. "The arrival of the fifth environment minister in five years augurs nothing well for future generations."

"The world is starting to recognize the Arctic as an early warning system," Chris Debicki, spokesman for Pew Environment Group's Oceans North Canada, told Postmedia News. "Minister Kent is in a great position to respond to the alarms that are already sounding in the Canadian Arctic."
