08/05/2004 - Forty years ago, the United States did something that no nation had ever done before. With the passage of the Wilderness Act on Sept. 3, 1964, the U.S. made the decision to preserve some of the country’s wild places in perpetuity, to create areas in which development would not be allowed, so that future generations would be able to enjoy the same beautiful and valuable natural settings that hikers, hunters, fishermen and even passing drivers seeking windshield scenery enjoyed in 1964. Go to the article on the Missoula Independent Web site--Wilderness On Hold.
