One of the striking patterns of the 2004 presidential election was the so-called “God gap,” the tendency of religiously observant citizens to vote Republican and the less observant to vote Democratic. But recent events suggest that this pattern may be changing, including the increased references to faith by Democratic presidential candidates and the passing of old-guard leaders of the “Christian Right.” Is the “God gap” closing in 2008?

The participants will discuss of this question and related issues with E.J. Dionne, Jr., author of the newly released Souled Out: Reclaiming Faith and Politics after the Religious Right, a long time op-ed columnist for The Washington Post, and a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution; Amy Sullivan, author of the newly published The Party Faithful: How and Why Democrats Are Closing the God Gap and the nation editor for Time magazine; and Ross Douthat, associate editor of Atlantic Monthly and a published writer in The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, National Review, Policy Review and Details.

This event is for invited guests.
