Higher Fuel Efficiency Would Save Drivers Money During Fourth of July Weekend

This Independence Day 34.4 million Americans will drive at least 50 miles during the 5-day holiday weekend (July 3-7, 2013) to visit friends and family, go to the beach, or attend a picnic and fireworks. Another 3 million will travel by air to their destination.

Gas prices will contribute significantly to the cost of holiday excursions. According to AAA, travelers will spend $747 during the holiday, and transportation is expected to account for nearly 29 percent of expenses. 
With national gas prices averaging $3.54 per gallon, drivers are looking for relief. Americans list fuel efficiency as the No. 1 priority when purchasing a new vehicle, according to Consumer Reports National Research Center.

Last summer, the Obama administration finalized fuel efficiency rules that require a manufacturer’s fleet of cars and light trucks to achieve an average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. If these standards were in place today, drivers would save more than $63 million during the extended July 4th holiday weekend alone. And 18 million fewer gallons of gas would be consumed, decreasing pollution and U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

These regulations will also create new jobs, spur vehicle innovation, provide drivers with more choices, and help automakers become more competitive at home and abroad.
