On April 8, The Pew Charitable Trusts hosted a webinar with Pentagon officials, “Energy R&D, Demonstration Projects, and the Acquisition System: How to Work with the Department of Defense.” The discussion focused on Department of Defense research, development, and testing programs for energy technologies and on opportunities for businesses to work with the military to develop their innovations. This event was the first in a two-part series; the subsequent webcast, on Aug. 4, focused on facilities energy projects.

Sharon Burke, adviser to the Pew project on national security, energy, and climate and former assistant secretary of defense for operational energy, moderated the panel, which featured:

  • Richard Carlin, Ph.D., department head of the sea warfare and weapons division in the Office of Naval Research.
  • Camron Gorguinpour, Ph.D., director of transformational innovation to the assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisitions.
  • John Pellegrino, Ph.D., deputy assistant secretary of the Army for strategic integration.
