The Big Sky Country is home to wild landscapes, a large variety of wildlife, and outdoor recreation.  Efforts are underway to add to Montana’s existing treasure of wilderness, parks, and monuments.  The state also has serious fiscal challenges.   Public pensions are seriously underfunded, while prisons require a far larger share of tax dollars than they did a generation ago.

By the numbers

  • 700,000 acres of wilderness U.S. Senate bill will protect in Montana’s Beaverhead-Deerlodge, Lolo, and Kootenai national forests

  • 275,000 acres in western Montana proposed in congressional legislation for conservation management or as additions to wilderness areas
  • 645 MWT amount of wind generation capacity, up from just two megawatts in 2005
