U.K. Government Builds Its Ocean Legacy

This image gallery was updated on Sept. 15, 2016 to include recently announced and designated marine reserves.

In September 2016, the United Kingdom officially declared  one of the world’s largest fully protected marine reserves in the Pitcairn Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. At around 830,000 square kilometers (320,465, square miles), the Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve is one of the largest continuous areas of protected ocean on the planet.

This designation marks the first time that any government has combined creation of a fully protected remote marine area with detailed plans for surveillance and enforcement that include the most up-to-date technology available. It sets a new standard for the comprehensive monitoring of protected areas.
