Top 10 Corals and Creatures in Mid-Atlantic’s ‘Deep-Sea Backyard’

Note: This item was updated on June 10, 2015, to reflect action taken by the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council.

Scientific explorations have revealed an abundance of deep-sea corals off the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States. These slow-growing formations can live hundreds of years and shelter an array of amazing animals. But deep-sea corals are as fragile as they are fantastic, and fishing gear can easily damage or destroy them. Fisheries officials have voted to protect coral communities in a large area of the mid-Atlantic, making more remarkable discoveries like these possible. Here’s a close look at some of the corals and creatures that need protection in our “deep-sea backyard.”
