New Proposals to Expedite Medical Device Development

On June 19, The Pew Charitable Trusts hosted a webinar examining two draft policy proposals from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration designed to accelerate patient access to novel medical devices and establish a new expedited development process for innovative technologies that treat or diagnose serious, unmet needs.

The webinar explored whether these new proposals sufficiently address patient access to new devices; appropriately target the type of applicable products; meaningfully shorten development times; and provide effective postmarket controls to ensure device safety and effectiveness.

Featured speakers included:

  • Jeff Shuren, Director, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, FDA
  • Ross Jaffe, Managing Director, Versant Ventures
  • Bray Patrick-Lake, CEO, PFO Research Foundation
  • David Holmes, Professor of Medicine, Mayo Clinic
