An Open Letter to NOAA Regarding the 2012 Meeting of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission
In an open letter to Dr. Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Pew Environment Group writes to express concern regarding the lack of meaningful outcomes at the recent Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) meeting. This year, many proposals that would have strengthened management of the fisheries of the eastern Pacific ecosystem were on the table. Conservation and management measures that would have protected vulnerable shark populations, ended overfishing of bigeye tuna, and required an independent performance review of IATTC were discussed, but no agreement was reached, and progress was suspended for a year.
