Alaska Protected Prey Base with Strong Support of Fishermen

Fishery managers in Alaska put many key forage species off-limits more than a decade ago, with the strong support of commercial fishermen. “Prohibiting the commercial use of forage fish at this time is a pro-active move of which the [North Pacific Fishery Management] Council can be proud. Harvesting both predators and prey is akin to burning a candle at both ends,” wrote Chris Blackburn, director of the Alaska Groundfish Data Bank in a comment letter to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council on April 9, 1997.
