Statement for the Record of the House Natural Resources Committee Hearing on the President's National Ocean Policy
More than 2.3 million Americans earn a living that depends on the ocean and its resources. Yet the dozens of federal agencies whose work addresses the marine environment and commercial development often function at cross purposes. In July 2010, President Obama issued an executive order establishing a National Ocean Policy to address the lack of coordination and overlapping jurisdictions.
Today, the House Committee on Natural Resources will hold a hearing questioning the need for this policy. Chris Mann, Director of the Pew Environment Group's Campaign for Healthy Oceans, submitted testimony in response, discussing the ocean, its potential for exploitation and recovery, and how the National Ocean Policy is needed to preserve these millions of jobs.
