Letter to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council Regarding Amendment 17A and Regulatory Amendment 10

According to SouthEast Data, Assessment, and Review, although red snapper have shown some improvement, the bottom line remains the same – they are still undergoing overfishing and overfished, and in need of strong protections to rebuild the population. As you consider potential adjustments to the bottom-fishing closure included in Amendment 17A, we strongly urge you to ensure that the final plan adequately accounts for bycatch mortality, as required by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and recommended in National Standard 1.
