Letter to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council Regarding the Comprehensive Annual Catch Limit and Accountability Measures Amendment

The revised Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act requires annual catch limits and accountability measures such that overfishing does not occur for all stocks in the fishery by 2011. Overall, the proposed series of actions and alternatives in the Accountability Measures Amendment provides a useful overview of the issues that should be included.  However, the Pew Environment Group is concerned that the current draft of the Amendment falls short of addressing several of the new requirements of the law, and thus may not be sufficient to restore and protect fisheries in the region.  A thoughtful Amendment that complies with the MSA requirements and National Standard 1 Guidelines should be a foundation on which to secure a future of healthy fishpopulations and vibrant fisheries.
