Letter to the Red Drum Special Working Group Regarding Allowable Biological Catch

Scientific and anecdotal information suggest that red drum populations may have rebounded substantially since the federal fishery was closed in the late 1980s. However, there has not been
a comprehensive assessment of the entire Gulf of Mexico population since 2000, and that assessment was limited by the lack of information about the offshore adult portion of the
population. The 2000 assessment concluded, with a high degree of uncertainty, that the Gulf red drum population was overfished with respect to the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management
Council's management goal.
