The updated stock assessment shows that gag grouper is experiencing both overfishing and is already dangerously overfished. Allowing continued overfishing on such a depleted population while a rebuilding plan is developed risks further depleting the already troubled gag population. If the Council pursues that course of action, catch levels established in a rebuilding plan implemented two years from now may need to be even more restrictive than currently projected.
