Paul G. Allen Family Foundation
Four decades after co-founding Microsoft, entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul G. Allen is still exploring the frontiers of technology and human knowledge, seeking to expand the horizons of human possibility. Through his company, Vulcan Inc., and his philanthropy, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, Allen is working to save endangered species; slow climate change; improve ocean health; share art, history, and film; develop new technology; tackle epidemics; research how the human brain works; and build sustainable communities. In all his endeavors, Allen constantly asks, “What if …?” and pushes people to challenge conventional thinking, collaborate across disciplines, and reimagine what’s possible.
The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation’s efforts to protect endangered species and improve ocean health include conservation of the world’s sharks. Sharks are being killed at a rate of 100 million per year, and the foundation has supported efforts to improve laws, regulations, and other policies to preserve sharks, which are essential to the ocean’s ecosystem.
“Working with The Pew Charitable Trusts to create protections for 13 species of sharks and rays through international treaties is a huge step in the right direction,” Allen says, “and one that is necessary to ensure their survival for generations to come.”
