European Elasmobranch Association's (EEA) 11th annual meeting

Assoiciation Pour L’Etude et la Conservation des Sélaciens (APECS ) is hosting the 11th European Elasmonbranch Association (EEA) meeting at Oceanopolis, the ocean discovery park of Brest, France. This will be an exciting weekend of presentations by some of the world’s top shark and ray experts. The EEA Annual Board Meeting will take place on Friday afternoon, followed by an evening public event. The main scientific meeting will be held on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November.

An optional excursion is proposed on Monday 26th to visit the National Botanic Conservatory of Brest, the first botanical nursery garden created in the world in 1975 which manages and looks after one of the largest set of endangered plants, growing about 1700 species and among which twenty have been kept alive thanks to their actions.

Invited are contributions dealing with any aspects of cartilaginous fishes, past, present or future, dealing with, but not restricted to the topics of :

"Biodiversity, fishery and conservation of Chondrichtyans"

Two special sessions are already proposed:

  • "Husbandry and conservation"
  • "Basking shark"

Contributors from all parts of Europe and beyond are invited to further enhance communication and the exchange of information. Students presenting an oral communication as first or sole author are invited to compete for a travel grant to attend the meeting. Eligible candidates must submit their abstract by the deadline.

The meeting will be comprised of video-conferences, oral communications and posters presentations. All will be conducted in English.

An open photo competition is schedulded on the topic ‘Le Requin dans tous ses états” (Sharks in any state). The images will be displayed at Oceanopolis during the Meeting and the week before. The best photo will be awarded by EEA 2007 jury and win a publication in the French magazine Nautilus (http://www.nautilusmagazine.com/).

Auctions to raise fund for 2008 EEA meeting’s student travel grants will be organized during the Saturday evening social diner. Any items (photos, books, t-shirts, tresures or “knick-knack of the seas”) are welcomed, thank you to think about it !

Day 4 : Monday, November 26 th : Optional tour

10h00-12h00 : Visit of the National Botanic Conservatory : at the heart of a plant-world ark. Out of the 420,000 plant species inventoried on our planet, 20 % are threatened with extinction due to human activity. In an attempt to stem the decline of wild flora, the Botanic Conservatory was created in Brest in 1975. It was the first establishment in the world to be solely devoted to saving plants threatened with extinction. Strolling along the garden paths and through the greenhouses of this Noah’s ark of sorts, you’ll explore the world of plants and understand how important it is to protect it.
