Editorial: Let Voters Opt Out of Sample Ballots Sent by U.S. Mail

Ventura County could save more than $100,000 during every major election if as few as one in five voters would agree to receive the sample-ballot information online instead of by U.S. mail.

This conclusion comes from a nonprofit think tank's report that examined the costs of providing information to voters in California's 58 counties.

E-mail or a website would be convenient ways for voters to receive or access sample ballots if they prefer to opt out of the paper system, according to the analysis by researcher Lauren Hengl at UC Berkeley. Her findings are in the report issued by the Washington, D.C.-based Pew Center on the States, part of the nonprofit Pew Charitable Trusts.
