Election Assistance Commission Releases 2014 Election Data

Last week, the federal Election Assistance Commission released the 2014 Election Administration and Voting Survey, the most comprehensive data set collected to date about the voting process in the United States.

The report includes data related to voter registration, provisional and mail ballots, military and overseas voters, poll workers, and voting technology.

Among the highlights:

  • 892,202 provisional ballots were cast nationwide, 1 percent of total ballots cast, and of those, 80 percent were counted in full or in part.
  • 3.2 million registration transactions were conducted online.
  • Nearly 19 million voters cast an absentee ballot, of which 98 percent were counted.

Collecting these data is essential to better understanding how election administration is working, a fact that the Presidential Commission on Election Administration reaffirmed by including robust data collection among its recommendations to states.
