Pew Comments to National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics on Unique Device Identifiers

On Thursday, September 18, The Pew Charitable Trusts submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) regarding recommendations on incorporating the unique device identifier (UDI) into administrative transactions, specifically insurance claim forms.

Pew’s comments support capturing UDI in claim forms as a way to improve data available to health plans, regulators, and researchers on the performance of medical devices. The comments also state that health plans and hospitals have already identified clear business needs to capturing and transmitting UDI, and that standards development organizations should now propose technical solutions to allow for such capture.
